Here is the rundown of UFC 47 "It's On" from Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. Show started off with the annoucement that Tim Sylvia had not passed a urinal test and he would not be competing. Dana White said that it was due to this fight and his prior positive steroid test being so close together that traces of the original usage were detected and that Sylvia is clean. They never mentioned the change in the card during the pregame show.
WES SIMS VS MIKE KYLE
Sims took this fight on a days notice, Sims started off strong going for two different chokes but couldn't end the fight with either. Kyle hit a flurry of punches and the fight was called with 0:01 left in the 1st round as KO win for Kyle. After the fight Sims showed the officials a bite mark and claimed that Kyle bit him. The decision was not changed and they said a bite would only constitute a penalty and not a DQ.
WINNER: Mike Kyle at 4:59 of Round 1 via KO
They interviewed Carson Daly in the crowd for his thoughts on Liddell Vs Ortiz.
ROBBIE LAWLER VS NICK DIAZ
Diaz came out and was taunting Lawler excessively, Diaz went for some low kicks and tagged Lawler a few times but failed to follow through on any of them. Lawler hit a flurry but Diaz recovered. In the 2nd round Diaz hit the knockout punch that just rocked Lawler and the fight was called. After the fight Diaz was acting arrogant fixing his hair in the camera.
WINNER: Nick Diaz at 4:29 of Round 2 via KO
In a weird segment they had Mark Lehman do a taped demonstation video of how to use a triangle choke and how it is applied in a fight. If this was a "How to" video fine but for fans that paid $29.95 they are likely part of the hardcore base audience that doesn't need to know all of this. The announcers warned fans not to try this at home.
"CABBAGE" VS ANDREI ARLOVSKI
Wes Correira is simply known now as "Cabbage". B.J Penn was in Cabbage's corner and came to the ring with a Cabbage Patch Doll, I guess this was supposed to get into the head of Arlovsky somehow? This fight was all Arlovski and Cabbage just kept taking all the punishment from flurries of punches to a knee to the head, Cabbage just kept taking it. Finally Arlovski ended it in the 2nd round with a flurry and knocked Cabbage to the ground. Cabbage took a beating in this one.
WINNER: Andrei Arlovski at 3:45 of Round 2
All night long they were plugging UFC 48 on 6/19 at Mandalay Bay with the two headline matches of Ken Shamrock Vs Kimo and a rematch between Phil Baroni and Evan Tanner.
YVES EDWARDS VS HERMES FRANCA
This may have been fight of the night. Franca started off the fight going for kicks but had little effect on Edwards, who put on a clinic in this match for defensive strategy. Franca at one point almost got an ankle lock but Edwards easily escaped. In the 3rd round Franca went for a Edwards leg but ended up propelling himself into the cage. Match went to the judges. Judges went Edwards on a split decision. Edwards had the line of the night when he was announced the winner he yelled out "Thank you...very god damn much".
WINNER: Yves Edwards (decision)
CHRIS LYTLE VS TIKI GHOSN
Maninly a stanup match as most of the matches were tonight. Tiki seemed hesitant at times to go in for anything. Lytle got him on the ground in the 2nd round for the tapout.
WINNER: Chris Lytle in Round 2
TITO ORTIZ VS CHUCK LIDDELL
Right off the start Ortiz threw his hat into the audience and the fan threw it back in the ring. Very uneventful first round, shades of that terrible Ken Shamrock Vs Dan Severn fight in 1995. The highlight of the 1st round came at the buzzer when Liddell connected with a kick to Ortiz's head, Ortiz shrugged it off telling Liddell to bring it. 2nd round was short and it was all Liddell and he just hit a big punch and then rocked Ortiz with like 10 or so unanswered punches to the face that caused the ref to stop the fight. After the fight Ortiz put over Liddell and said he wants to fight Lee Murray in June.
WINNER: Chuck Liddell at 0:38 of the 2nd round via KO
They aired one dark match
GENKI SUDO VS MIKE BROWN
In the preview I listed Brown as being 0-2, I confused him with another figher of the same name, this Mike Brown actually had an impressive 9-1 record. Sudo had an awesome entrance doing the robot dance to the ring. Fight started off standing and eventually went to the ground where Brown showed a lot of skill, Sudo went for an armbard but Brown retaliated with a number of punches to the head before Sudo really snapped on the armbar and Brown fell back causing himself to have to tap out.
WINNER: Genki Sudo at 3:30 of Round 1 via tapout
