ECWA Eighth Annual Super 8 Tournament Newport, DE results:
ECWA held its eighth Annual Super 8 Tournament last night before a packed house at St. Matthews Parish Center in Wilmington, DE.
Opening Round:
Austin Aries beat Shawn Daivari (who replaced "Textbook" Tyson Dux, injured on a Velocity taping) with a 450 splash. This was a very good start to the evening.
ECWA champion Mike Kruel beat Ricky Reyes via tapout. This was the only real negative of the evening. Reyes was given absolutely no offense in this match, inexplicable when international talent like this is brought in. It would be understandable that ECWA wanted to keep its champion strong, but to have this turn into a virtual squash was incomprehensible. There later wound up being a storyline reason for Kruel going over, but....
A well-done video aired (introduced by last year's winner Paul London), with many highlight clips from all seven previous Super 8 tournaments.
Christopher Daniels beat Rocky Romero. This was an excellent match with both wrestlers allowed to look strong as opposed to the Kruel-Reyes match.
John Walters beat Nicho (Psicosis). Nicho was wearing his old Psicosis outfit (stating at the pre-show press event that this was a "special occasion"), but midway through the match he stripped off the chest protector part of the outfit and the Psicosis mask.
Semi-finals:
Christopher Daniels beat Mike Kruel in a second round match to advance to the finals. Another very good match for Daniels. Post-match, Kruel got on the microphone, and said since he was a fighting champion and lost, he should give him the ECWA title. So Daniels appears now to be the ECWA heavyweight champion.
Austin Aries beat John Walters with a 450. Many considered this an upset, as Walters was picked by many to win the Super 8.
Non-tournament:
The team of Ace Darling and Matt Striker won the annual Tag Team Summit to earn a title match with ECWA Tag Champions The Valedictorians. Low-Ki made a surprise appearance together with Mike Fury. In a hilarious moment, the Japanese Pool Boy came out to the "The Wizard of Oz" theme, dressed as Dorothy (I don't make these things up, folks) and teamed with a wrestler (no word as to who) in a outfit like the Wizard of Oz scarecrow.
The Valedictorians (Billy Bax and Rob Eckos) beat Ace Darling and Striker to retain the titles after their manager Carlton P. Hightower hit Striker with the "gimmicked" yearbook to set up the pinfall.
Finals:
In the finals, Christopher Daniels pinned Austin Aries after a mind-blowing finish of three consecutive "Best Moonsaults Ever" to nail Aries for the pinfall to win the Super 8 after multiple false finishes.
Christopher Daniels is the first two-time winner of the ECWA Super Eight.
ECWA returns to St. Matthews Parish Center on May 1.
